Where to Eat in the Woodstock & Catskills As Recommended by Locals

Woodstock NY is a great place to visit for so many reasons. Music, art, and culture have all be shaped by the famous little town.  After visiting the iconic recording studios and celebrated venues, tracing the footsteps of famous music celebrities, experiencing all the surrounding area has to offer, and visiting us here at the Woodstock Music Shop you might have developed an appetite. So, if you are visiting Woodstock NY for the weekend, the day, or hopefully longer take some local recommendations for some of our favorite restaurants in Woodstock ,NY.

The Bear Cantina

The Bear Cafe is described as “Rustic haunt known for New American fare & a streamside setting on the grounds of Bearville Theater” with food that is “excellent and full of flavor”, as well as “great service and views of the Sawkill Creek”. This says nothing of the long, storied history of the eatery and how it came to occupy 295a Tinker Street.

Originally established in 1971 by Albert Grossman, the former music industry mogul who led Bearsville Records and Studios and managed Bob Dylan, The Band, Todd Rundgren, Janis Joplin and Peter, Paul & Mary, among others. Grossman personally designed and financed the Bearsville Theater Complex (link to venues), which features The Bear Cafe, The Little Bear, Bearsville Theater, and the former Utopia Video Complex, now home to WDST Radio.

The Bear is a Woodstock classic. Peter Cantine and Chef Eric Mann have run The Bear since 1988 and, along with another investor, bought the entire complex in 2004 from Sally Grossman, Albert’s widow. The Bear’s decor featured hardwood floors, a grand fireplace and signature oil paintings by local Woodstock artist Jo Cantine, Peter’s late aunt.

The Bear Cantina re-opened in early 2021 after extensive renovations completed by the new proprietor, Lizzie Vann. No wonder it is one of the best restaurants in Woodstock NY according to locals! It offers modern Mexican food with creek side dining in the Bearsville Center.
